It was by far one of the most tiring Holy Week experience ever. What I thought will be a laid-back one turned out to be one of the most exhausting. I am already working so I didn't have enough time to ready myself for what was to come; and so I got tired.

But as this is one of the most tiring, this is basically the most rewarding. No joke there. This Lenten Season is definitely my most favorite.

I'm not gonna talk about what I did during the past few days; but I'm gonna hope that I can put into words all the emotions I felt when I was seeing each moment happen through the lenses of the camera I used. I fervently pray that whatever transpired within me during those days, I can share with all of you without missing out on anything.

While I'm thinking of terminologies to use, my mind just concluded that all in all, this experience was like a brand new experience. Although I've been doing this kind of service for the past few years, it is only this time that I felt like I know what I'm doing.

You see, when you know what you're doing something for, its essence becomes exponential. That's what happened. When the week opened on Palm Sunday, I knew that for the first time in my life as the parish photographer, I'm gonna be totally serious.

And I guess that's the most important learning. I think that's what made everything extra special. Knowing my purpose granted me that sense of fulfillment, that sense of completeness - that despite the physical, emotional and mental stress we've all gone through, our willingness to use this talent to serve the Lord prevailed.

Thinking about it, there is only one reason why I got through it: I offered everything for the glory of His name. Prior to all events, I always whisper a prayer, asking God to give me strength and let me maximize my talent so I can use it to honor Him.

And judging from the reception of the people and the sense of joy within me right now, I knew He heard me.

As for my Lenten reflection, there was not one moment during the Holy Week that I didn't feel overwhelmed. Superstitions might dictate that we should not feel cheerful during these days because Jesus was suffering, but I believe otherwise. If there's anything to feel, I believe it has to be joy.

He died for us and salvation came in the form of His death on the cross. If that kind of love won't move you, I don't know what else will. Once again, I might be overreacting but it's true when I say that there are several moments when I was attending masses that I actually teared up. I actually cried.

I feel ashamed because I'm a sinner, but that doesn't mean God's ashamed of me as well. And that is exactly why I was crying: because despite of my sins, I am loved.

The Holy Week of 2015 had brought changes to my spiritual life. It cleansed my thoughts and redirected my journey. Although I couldn't remember every words said by the priests during their sermons or I might have not prayed that much during processions, I will never forget how these days made me feel.

And I hope... I hope I wasn't the only one who felt that way. ♥

Holy Week 2015: What It Made Me Feel

Thursday, January 22, 2015

It might be a little late but Happy Feast Day, St. Agnes!

She's the first saint whose life I've read when I was barely 7. I was in Grade 1 St. Agnes and that sparked my curiosity about who this saint was. Mom, fortunately, bought me a book and from there, the inspiration budded.

However, it was only last year when I got to visit a chapel dedicated to her.

In Bulakan, Bulacan, her image made of ivory is displayed in a small chapel in a small town named after her. According to stories, it was found in a nearby river by fishermen who couldn't pull it out of the water. But when a woman tried, she easily lifted it up and from there sprung the belief that only women can touch the image.

It might be so peculiar to many but according to the locals in Sta. Ines, it was the beautiful mystery of it. Once, a priest decided to touch it during his sermon and the unthinkable happened. Thunders roared suddenly and rain poured heavily. An impossible folklore, you say? I don't think so. We talked to actual witnesses of the events. The way they relate the story was believable.

Since then, no man dared to touch the image.

When we went there, I was the only girl in the group. Thus, I was the only one who managed to venerate and get close to the saint. While my friends were just taking pictures from a distance, I can do close-ups and all.

But the highlight of the visit was the fact that I managed to carry the image.

Maybe it's because of my friends' influence, but I have long believed that the weight of an image depends on the person carrying it. As ridiculous as it may sound to non-believers, we've always believed that if the saint doesn't want you to carry his/her image, you wouldn't be able to because of the heavy weight.

And so that's why when I asked St. Agnes if I could carry her image even for just a split second, I was grateful when she allowed me to. She was heavy, but light enough for my weak arms to handle. It was an awesome experience. I feel so blessed!

Before we went home, I whispered a little prayer. I asked her for blessings. I have told my deepest desires, my most wonderful dreams. I pleaded for her guidance that she may teach me her ways to the Lord.

And now that we're commemorating her feast day (albeit being one-day late), I want to remember the kind of faith I've felt that day when we visited her image. And remind myself to come back there one day and join the other Catholics in Bulacan in revering her untainted holiness.

Happy feast day to the patron of virgins.
St. Agnes, pray for us.

The Patron of Virgins

I'm jumping onto the bandwagon. We're 6 days into the new year and I'm once again trying to get back in shape. As embarrassing as it is to admit, I actually hit a record-high weight of 78 kilos and is officially tagged as obese. Just last night, I finally felt its repercussions and that's when I realized that I really need to get back on track.

Starting again is never easy. Last time I felt motivated, it took me a few months to really begin. It took me a whole lot of deal looking through diet tips on the internet. What a stubborn mind I have, right? But I guess I've taken into consideration the extremity of my current situation that I think things will be easier this time... hopefully.

So this morning, I took out my best ally, the sauna suit; put it on; and decided to do my personal version of a workout - general cleaning. It may not be as reliable as an actual trip to the gym but for now, it compensates. It's like hitting two birds in one stone. I get to sweat profusely, and I get to help my parents with the house chores - albeit looking like a walking garbage bag. HAH!

As for the food I'm eating, I decided not to do a crash diet. It had taken its toll on my body the last time I did, resulting to my obesity, so I'll have to be more careful. No pressure though. Just gonna eat less of everything and I'll be fine.

To be honest, I do not put so much focus on losing weight. I may be trying, but I've learned the consequences of forcing myself to do it. I'm practicing discipline but I'm not being harsh with myself, and I guess that's what makes things a lot easier. Being kind to myself indeed makes a lot of difference.

It's not a secret that I'm one of the busiest people in town during the preparations for the Feast Day of Christ the King. Teased as 'Hermana', I am one of those who had to exert 101% effort to get things done, to meet deadlines, to gather people, and to assure smooth flow of the whole event. It was like a practice for what I learned in college. It was an opportunity I have found to get myself go back to how I was a few years ago.

It was totally tiring though because only a few cooperates. It didn't help that I was constantly irked by people who didn't even know what they were supposed to do yet won't listen to my directions because I'm younger than they are. But I guess, there's not a single event where people like those do not exist. There will always be one of their kind.

Due to pressure and stress, I have even come close to giving up. I even told my mom that I don't want to do it anymore. I even fought with my dad because of my mood swing. But I knew I couldn't, I shouldn't... and I wouldn't.

Because I have taken the first step and so there's no turning back.

To be honest, I don't want to go back to the rants and complaints which came out of my mouth during the whole preparation period. The more important thing is screaming at my face, telling me that in spite of all the hardships and trials, everything turned out successful.

It's That Feeling Again

OKAY! So this isn't really the final since there's gonna be a lot more to add like captions and other photos that aren't given to me yet, but as I've said in my Instagram account, it feels so surreal to hold an actual manuscript of a book I have designed, and taken pictures for. Knowing that it's going to be published sooner or later, it ignites anticipation because as soon as this gets done, I can proudly say that a dream came true.

Yes, it has always been my dream to see my name on a book. I have always wanted to put a book in my shelf and then show it to people, telling them that I took part in its creation. Ever since grade school, I've always hoped to publish something I did.

I used to think that this dream will happen with me as the writer. But the first step is not always what you expect. Sometimes, it's far better than what you wanted.

We're still halfway through finishing the book despite the deadline being just a week from now; but I already claim the pride. I have my shots here. I'm doing 90% of the book's layout. And most importantly, I have my name on the credits. That's saying something for someone who doesn't have much to offer, to be honest.

I know it's too early but I just can't help myself. I have created a manuscript, an actual manuscript, which is set for publishing. People are gonna buy the book we're creating. They're going to see what we've worked so hard for. And hopefully, they're gonna appreciate. I hope they do appreciate.

But let me tell you one thing: more than the pride of being 'published', the more important thing to me is that this book had provided me a bigger chance to do something I've always wanted to do, and that is to promote my province. Now, my objective has gone beyond La Bulaqueña.

Bulacan had always been a beautiful place but too underrated, especially for tourists. We have no beach to attract foreigners during summer, or extensive natural wonders to boast. But we have impressive churches and a real deal of historic and cultural importance; and I believe that's enough to take pride on.

This book is a simple one, but I hope it does strike readers where it should. I hope that through the simple write-ups and photos which we painstakingly put together, we get to nudge everyone's sleeping interest on our province awake. I pray that through the pieces of information we have decided to include in this soon-to-be publication, we can inspire and motivate many to visit a place that is actually more than what it's given credit for.

After all, Bulacan isn't just about crime incidents, smuggled rice warehouses, and natural calamities. It's more than all of that.

Dreams Coming True

So my hands are currently full.

I'm working on the 2nd and 3rd chapter of the book. I need to be a good and hardworking daughter today because it's my mom's 64th birthday. And I need to atleast try to squeeze some three hours off my today's schedule to see Rurouni Kenshin with my brother.

But that doesn't mean I'm not going to pay attention to the highlight of my day: IT'S THE FIRST DAY OF THE NOVENA FOR ST. FRANCIS' FEAST DAY.

Last night was so hectic. Everyone was at the office, doing last minute preparations. The programme I designed arrived late so it made everyone feel panicky. Thank God, we managed to finish everything and I got to do teasers even, so it was all good.

When I woke up this morning, I really was feeling queasy, but in a good way. Maybe mixed with pressure, but still in a good way. I'm excited, even. I'm excited because after a long time, I'm gonna be able to hold a camera and take shots of the happenings around my favorite sanctuary.

To be honest, I'm kinda feeling nervous with this whole ordeal. The mass and novena was handled by Kuya Robby this morning so I'm hoping that the pictures will be uploaded soon, and then I'm gonna take charge with the poster making contest which will happen this afternoon. It's not something major for me to stay long, but I kinda need to be there still. Probably before going to the cinemas?

Another thing that quite makes me a little anxious is the fact that I might no longer know how to take proper pictures. Yes, I've worked as an amateur photographer for the book but I'm afraid that focusing on layout designs had robbed me my ability to actually see beauty in raw designs. Hopefully! And I hope Lu is still friendly with me!

Okay. So it has turned 8 and I need to get some things work done downstairs. I'm gonna clean the house and then move onto working for the book and then off to the church and then the cinemas.

Alright!

It wasn't the first event we did under the new administration. But why did it feel like so? I have personally heard the plans and witnessed the preparations; and actively took part on it, and enjoyed. so much.

ALL FOR THE GLORY OF GOD AND ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI.

Everything wasn't easy though. It made me question and realize a lot of things about myself, my life, my faith, and the people that surrounds me. Easy to say, I discovered what I need to discover and now I'm learning how to act on it accordingly.

But whenever I think of how much I have developed as a person and how much my faith and devotion was strengthened, all the pain I've went through for the past few days dissolve. The wounds brought by sharp words and unnecessary actions heal instantly. I become better.

I still can't forget how it made me feel when the Holy Mass began yesterday. I was at the back end of the church, just behind the bishop. I was holding his iPad Mini for documentation and suddenly, I just felt like trembling. As they walked to the altar, I stood there, with my hands shaking and tears welling up in my eyes. As Koro ni San Francisco accentuates the solemnity of the event with their orchestra-like arrangements, I had goosebumps. The church was packed. Almost everyone of the most important people were there.

I've never felt like in my 12 years of service.

Forgetting about my disappointments, that very moment I just felt like everything was perfect. Our dream of bringing back the glory of the Catholic Faith in Meycauayan had started and I just can't help but cry at how everything paid off. It was a rough start eight months ago, remember? And now, we've taken one step to victory. And I'm glad.

To be very honest, it will still be difficult from this point on. But I know it will be easier somehow. Because as I feel, we won't be working by ourselves anymore. There will be real help from people whose hearts the parish had managed to touch through their hard work and dedication in bringing back the glory we lost; people who managed to rediscover the magnificence of their roots in Meycauayan.

St. Francis of Assisi, bless us.
